The Taylor-Clark House was built about 1769, as the manor house for a plantation overlooking the Westfield River in Montgomery, Massachusetts. A distinguished example of colonial engineering, with generous room proportions and high ceilings, it was preserved in museum condition until its modern-day adventure.
In the 1980’s, the owners of 4391 Congress Street owned an estate extending from Congress to Redding Rd. They were enthralled with the idea of acquiring a revolutionary-era house in its pure state and adapting it for modern times. They had a large enough property to split off seven acres, with exquisite natural landscaping, a stream and a pond. The Taylor-Clark house was carefully dismantled and reassembled on its stunning new site. With a new concrete basement, new electric, new plumbing, central heat and a new kitchen wing, it retains historic magic with none of the inconvenience. It showcases every treasure of eighteenth-century craftsmanship, including wide plank flooring with hand-made nails, hand-hewn beams, fireplaces with dutch and beehive ovens, wall paneling, doors and framing. New windows copy the original versions and include old glass panes. The central chimney was removed and replicated. Original colors still show in some places. The atmosphere, fine engineering and handcrafted features of an exceptional mid-18th century home are intact, with slight modifications to meet current building codes.
